What is DLT Registration and Why Do You Need It?
DLT Template Registration Guide
Let’s break it down step by step to help you get started with ease.
Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) registration is mandatory for businesses using SMS for communication in India. It is the process through which businesses register themselves with telecom operators to send commercial SMS and voice messages.
DLT is a blockchain-based platform introduced by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). It ensures transparency and prevents spam in SMS communication. Businesses must register on a DLT platform to send promotional or transactional messages.
Through DLT registration, businesses must provide details about their entity, communication templates, and sender IDs. The system protects customers from unsolicited messages by maintaining a secure and traceable ledger of all communications.
The key components of DLT registration include:
- Header registration
- Template registration
- PE-TM Binding
- CTA Whitelisting
Before starting the registration process, gather the following documents and information:
- Business PAN card
- GST certificate
- Proof of identity (Aadhaar/Passport/Driving Licence of authorized signatory)
- Proof of address
- Valid Email-ID and phone number

Step-by-Step Guide for DLT Registration
Let’s move on to understanding the entire process for DLT registration.

Step 1: Choose a DLT Platform
Select a telecom operator’s DLT platform (e.g., Airtel, Jio, or Vodafone-Idea). Businesses need to register with only one operator, as records are shared across platforms.
DLT Operators List
You can register any of the below operators as principal Entity to get your headers, templates approved
Step 2: Register as a Principal Entity (PE)
1. Visit the chosen DLT platform’s website.
2. Click on Sign Up or Register as a Principal Entity.
3. Fill in the required details:
Business Name
PAN/GST Number
Business Type
4. Upload the necessary documents.
5. Verify your email ID and phone number.
6. Complete OTP verification process.
7. Await verification approval (typically 48-72 hours).

Step 3: Header (Sender ID) Registration
A header or sender ID is the name or number displayed as the sender of your SMS. These could be alphanumeric (ABC123) or numeric (123456). Headers are of two types:
Promotional: For marketing campaigns (654789).
Other: For transactional (Implicit or Explicit) messages such as one-time passwords (OTPs) or service updates. Header should be company name (MICRON).
Steps for Header Registration:
- Log in to the DLT platform.
- Navigate to the Headers on the Dashboard Menu.
- Click on Add Header and select the type.
- Provide the desired header name and upload supporting documents if required.
- Submit the application for approval.
- Await confirmation (usually 24-48 hours).
Note: Access to the Dashboard Menu is granted only after completing the payment for the DLT portal.
Important!
SMS messages can only be sent by entities with registered headers. Please reach out to MySMSMantra once your headers have been approved.
Headers (sender names) are case-sensitive. For example, BNKTXT and bnktxt are treated as two distinct sender names and can be registered individually.
Step 4: Template Approval & Variable Tagging
Templates define the content structure of your SMS messages. Each template must be pre-approved to avoid misuse.
Implicit Templates: For messages triggered by customer actions, like order confirmations.
Service Explicit to Promotional: Service Explicit templates are merging into Promotional, every new template gets exactly one header, and a sample message is now mandatory at registration.
Existing SE templates move to Promotional automatically, and new SE templates cannot be created. Window time to send SMS 10 AM to 9 PM only.
Steps for Template Approval
- Log in to the DLT Platform and navigate to the Templates section.
- Select Template Category among Implicit Consent and SE to Promotional Consent
- Add Template Details such as template name, template content, and category.
- Submit for Approval
- Await approval (usually 1-2 working days).
